Requirements for a Minor in Environmental Studies

Students may enroll in the Environmental Studies Program after entering a major program in any participating academic department at SIUC with the approval of their academic advisor and the Environmental Studies Coordinator. For students completing the core and elective courses, the program leads to an academic minor.

There are three core courses. Elective courses (a minimum of 6 hours) may be chosen from within five general groups, Environmental Agriculture, Environmental Education, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Policy, and Environmental Science.

core courses
elective courses

To enhance the interdisciplinary nature of a student's program, core and elective courses may not include courses counted towards the student's major, with the following exceptions.

The introductory core course ("Social Perspectives on Environmental Issues" or "Environmental Issues in the Contemporary World"), may count towards the student's University Core Curriculum requirement. Also, for students in departmental majors that require 130 credit hours or more for the BS degree, core and elective courses that fulfill requirements for the Environmental Studies minor also can be applied towards the major. Students entering the Environmental Studies minor must have their intended program approved by the Coordinator of the Environmental Studies program, and are encouraged to do so as early in their undergraduate program as possible.
